Clear your Desktop of files & folders

One issue that can affect the XP startup time is the number of files and folders on your Desktop. Most people use the Desktop as a storage folder so they can easily find documents. The best option would be to create yourself a folder to store your documents, downloads, pictures etc in. By doing this it also makes backing up your important documents easier as you know you have just the one folder and all sub-folders.

Also these files/folders are stored in your Windows Profile which can become corrupt. Therefore to improve the Windows XP Startup time keep your desktop clear.

To do this follow these easy steps:

First decide how you want to organise your folders, you could have a structure like this:

Storage
       |
        ------- Documents
       |                     |
       |                      ---------- Bank
       |                     |
       |                      ---------- Credit Cards
       |                     |
       |                      ---------- Personal Letters
       |
        ------- Downloads
       |                     |
       |                      ---------- Books
       |                     |
       |                      ---------- Music
       |                     |
       |                      ---------- Software

You could even create sub-folders within the sub-folders so Software may have sub-folders that relate to the type of software (Antivirus, screensavers etc)

Once you have decided on your structure open WIndows Explorer. If you have multiple drives then find the drive with the most disk space and then create the folder structure as decided before.
Once you have your structure in place you can then start moving your files off your desktop and into the correct folder.
